Mission
Statement
Rebuilding Together Boston, Inc. (RTB) is a non-profit organization
that renovates homes of Boston’s
low-income homeowners and non-profit facilities. These services are provided at no charge
to the recipients. RTB';s initiatives focus on providing safety, security,
and independence to our recipients, while preserving home ownership and
reducing the risk of homelessness. RTB works in partnership with the
community, volunteers, and skilled labor.
Who We Help
RTB
provides assistance to people who own their own homes, but who because of
physical or income limitations are not able to meet the costs of home
repair. Typically, these individuals have a disability and/or are elderly,
but low-income families and non-profit facilities are also included.
When We Work
After
months of extensive planning and preparation, Rebuilding Together Boston
culminates on National Rebuilding Day, the last Saturday in April. The Boston affiliate is also
looking to expand its services to a more year round model.
Who Volunteers
Anyone
can volunteer! Business executives, students, secretaries, doctors,
lawyers, homemakers, and bankers, all pitch in to help build a better
community! Skilled tradespeople are always in
demand . . . carpenters, plumbers, electricians, roofers, and others with
needed skills donate their time each year.
How It Works
Rebuilding
Together Boston takes its cue from the old fashioned idea of "barn
raising," with as many as 75 skilled and unskilled volunteers assigned
to a particular project. Homeowners are frequently amazed at the sheer
number of people who come out to lend them a helping hand. They are even
more amazed at the massive amount of work that can be accomplished by
caring volunteers in just one day!
Why It Works
Every
dollar spent is leveraged with over $4 in donated goods and services. Our
program is a success because it is "neighbors-helping-neighbors"
to build safer and stronger communities.
How You Can Help
You,
your company, or organization can participate by sponsoring a site that
will benefit from our collective services. We are able to capitalize on a
$7,500 site sponsorship, leveraging every dollar four times through donated
materials and volunteer labor. Best of all, your employees can volunteer
their energy and skills to transform a site for participating homeowners
and non-profit facilities.
Who Sponsors Rebuilding Together Boston
Rebuilding
Together Boston is privately funded. Currently, RTB does not have any state
or federal funding. All donations come from a variety of resources such as
corporations, foundations, civic associations, alumni associations,
religious organizations, and individuals interested in helping build a
better community.
How Are Homeowners
Selected
The
selection process takes place locally. Homeowners are encouraged to contact
our office for an application. Upon receipt of the application and
completion of the home inspection visit, qualified homeowners will be
accepted into the program. Homeowners are low-income, elderly, or disabled
and unable to make the needed repairs themselves. Referrals are also
accepted from a variety of sources including non-profit agencies, police
departments, social service organizations, churches, synagogues, and
individuals.
Is Rebuilding Together
Affiliated With a Particular
Church or Religion?
No. The
program embraces all people: all faiths, walks of life, racial and ethnic
groups, ages, and sexes.
Is There a Fee for Services?
All repairs
are free. Our work is done with and for families. Homeowners and family
members are asked to participate as extensively as possible in the
rehabilitation of their homes and non-profit centers.
